Detailed description of Lonnie Poole Golf Course At NC State University
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State University Clubhouse is a public 18-hole golf course located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is a North Carolina State University asset.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course opened to the public on July 13, 2009. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer and the design team at Arnold Palmer Design Company (including Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, both NC State graduates).
With breathtaking views of the Raleigh skyline and the award winning Centennial Campus, the golf course has become a favorite in the golf community. The purpose of the facility is to provide a public golf course on the Centennial Campus of NC State University that serves as a venue for the men's and women's varsity golf teams.
It also facilitates turf grass and storm water research associated with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Likewise, the golf course serves as a teaching and training facility for the Professional Golf Management (PGM) Program in the College of Natural Resources. The course is very playable for all skill levels and a large challenge to low handicap players.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course plays to a par-71. The course measures 7,358 yards from the back tees and 4,976 yards from the forward tees.

Great course if you are ready for a challenge. Pace of play could improve if people would play a length at this course which is appropriate for handicaps. The course does a great job placing hazards in the places normal people miss, even personal great shots can end up in error due to strategic bunks or hazards. If you want to improve your shot making ability and think through yardages, this is a great course that makes more open and forgiving courses seem much easier. This is not what I would call a risk reward course, it is a shot makers course. If you know your clubs and distances you can score, but if you "go for it" you will be in jail wondering why you have hockey sticks(7's) or snowmen (8's) on your card. Play smart and score. Good course but not for the beginner.

I have enjoyed this course every time I play. Pace of play can be slow, but that is mainly due to players playing back too far. One of the best public courses in the Triangle, right up there with Duke and Finley.
